When the South Fork is running high and fast, we don’t put tubes out anyway — it’s a water level and safety decision, not just a bacteria decision. Those two conditions almost always coincide, which means on the days the river is tube-appropriate, Shenandoah River water quality is typically in good shape too.

Regardless of trip type, a few simple steps go a long way toward reducing your exposure:

  • Cover cuts and open wounds with waterproof bandaging before you launch.
